  • Sent abroad on the Kings service in December 1376 with Geoffrey Chaucer as his retainer.
  • Invested into the Order of the Garter in 1377 (no 63)
 
 
Sir Simon Burley
(Knight)
? 15 May 1388
  • Close friend of the Black Prince (Edward, Prince of Wales) and sometimes called the most influential man in the kingdom of the prince's son, King Richard II.
  • Appointed guardian / tutor of Richard II by his father, the Black Prince, before his death.
  • Close friend and trusted advisor of Richard II.
  • Master of the King's Falcons. (Richard II)
  • Invested into the Order of the Garter in 1381 (no 69)
  • Member of commission of peace for Kent when Geoffrey Chaucer joined it on 12 October 1385.
  • Victim of the fist offical execution on Tower Hill. despite both King Richard II and his wife Anne of Bohemia pleading for his life.

Barry of six Sable and Or,
on a chief of the last two pallets of the first,
an inescutcheon Gules,
charged with three bars Ermine.

Barry = Horizontal line(s)
Sable = Black
Or = Gold
Chief = Upper third of COA
Pallet = Vertical line
Inescutcheon = Smaller inner-shield
Gules =  Red
Ermine = White fur with markings.
